January 5, 2023

AM Best Company, which describes itself as the world’s most authoritative insurance rating and information source, has awarded BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina its A+ rating for the 21st consecutive year.

AM Best ratings gauge the financial strength of insurance companies. The ratings represent a thorough analysis of operating performance, business profile, risk management processes and balance sheet strength compared to other insurance companies in the U.S. and abroad.

As the only South Carolina-owned and -operated health insurance carrier, BlueCross has offered its members extensive provider networks and a range of health insurance products for more than 75 years. BlueCross is the only health insurer competing in all customer segments in the state. Since 2016, it has been the only health insurer on the federal exchange in all counties in South Carolina.

Michael Mizeur, president and chief executive officer of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, said the continued A+ rating is a great accomplishment for the company. He said, “BlueCross is committed to operational excellence, continuous improvement and advancing the well-being of our members. Receiving this recognition for 21 consecutive years is evidence of our company’s strong brand and fiscal stability.”

He added, “BlueCross supports its operations through a rigorous focus on strategic planning. Combine that with strong employee engagement, generous philanthropy in our communities and innovative thinking, and we are able to earn the significant A+ rating from AM Best.”
